UNIDO, within the framework of the project “Industrial capacity-building, policy advice and diagnostics for the green recovery of Ukraine”, specifically the component “Distributed Energy Production and Energy Efficiency for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs),” provided grant support to two industrial enterprises in Ukraine. In 2023, a competition was announced to select potential beneficiaries of the project, resulting in 12 companies being included in the UNIDO support shortlist. The selection process required the collection of more detailed information on the planned energy efficiency and renewable energy (EE-RE) projects that the companies intended to implement. A group of UNIDO experts selected two companies to receive support for the implementation of demonstration projects combining EE-RE projects. The winners of the selection were “Trivium Packaging Ukraine” LLC from Bila Tserkva and “Starokostyantyniv Dairy Plant” SE from Starokostyantyniv.

UNIDO’s support to the selected companies in 2023-2024 included:

  1. Free technical expert support for the preparation or completion of EE-RE projects (until September 2023).
  2. Grant funding of up to 240,000 euros for both companies to purchase equipment and services necessary for the implementation of EE-RE projects (2024).
  3. Support during project implementation and post-project monitoring of the results achieved by the companies (until now).

Two projects were selected for implementation for each company, namely:

  • “Trivium Packaging Ukraine” LLC (Bila Tserkva):
    – Installation of a 248 kW grid-connected solar power plant (SPP) synchronized with a diesel power plant. Projected generation of 239.8 MWh per year.
    – Waste heat utilization project to utilize excess waste heat from hot air discharged from a gas furnace used for curing lacquered tin. Projected energy savings of up to 250 MWh per year.
  • “Starokostyantyniv Dairy Plant” SE (Starokostyantyniv):
    – Installation of a 100 kW grid-connected SPP. Projected generation of 115.8 MWh per year.
    – Project to replace an ammonia compressor and install equipment for heat recovery from the ammonia circuit. Projected energy savings of 31.5 MWh per year.

The implementation of these projects required not only grant funds but also co-financing from the companies. At this time, the installed SPPs generate clean renewable energy for the needs of the enterprises. Energy efficiency measures, due to their more complex technical components, are in the implementation stage.
