The Ninth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development was held in Kyiv on 12-15 November 2018. The Forum was co-organized by the Government of Ukraine and the five United Nations Regional Commissions in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), UN Environment, The World Bank, International Energy Agency (IEA), International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Global Environment Facility (GEF), Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), European Commission, International Energy Charter, International Energy Forum (IEF), the Copenhagen Centre on Energy Efficiency, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASА), Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental Safety, and Energy Technology UMSICHT, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Dartmouth College, Climate Action Network (CAN), and the World Nuclear Association (WNA).
It combined an opening ministerial session with plenary sessions and parallel workshops in four main tracks:
Energy transition and decarbonization
Robust systems and infrastructure
Matchmaking and investor confidence and
Hot topics and deep dives.
The Forum’s goal is to provide a unique opportunity for policymakers and experts from various parts of the energy sector to reflect on the implications of the fast-paced energy transition that has become the new normal, review the activities to date and to make further progress towards meeting the sustainable development goals.
During the Ninth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development were also held the Fifth session of the Group of Experts on Renewable Energy (GERE) and the Fifth session of the Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency (GEEE).
The focus of discussions of the Fifth session of the Group of Experts on Renewable Energy were activities included in the current work plan and the following topics:
Tracking progress in renewable energy development
Policies, best practices and multi-stakeholder dialogues on how to increase the uptake of renewable energy
Matchmaking event to support renewable energy instrument opportunities
Cross-cutting cooperation to integrate renewable energy in future energy systems and contribution to the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
The Fifth session of the Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency focused its discussions on activities included in its Work Plan for 2018-2019 and covered the following topics:
Energy efficiency in industry
Energy efficiency in buildings
Role of utilities, big date and geospatial data in energy transition
Overcoming barriers to financing of energy efficiency and renewable energy.
The representatives of UNIDO HQ, the project UKR IEE “Introduction of Energy Management System Standard in Ukrainian Industry”, UNIDO international and national experts took an active part in the Forum (Please refer to the “Making Industrial Energy Efficiency the New Normal” Workshop Program).
