The UNIDO UKR IEE project pays considerable attention to the promotion and support of Energy System Optimization (ESO), i.e. optimization of energy-consuming systems of industrial enterprises. For this, it is necessary to consider the entire system comprehensively – from the generation of the energy resource / energy carrier, its transportation, to its direct use in the technology of the enterprise (for example, the flow of water, air, compressed air, heating or cooling of products, etc.). Such a systematic approach makes it possible to significantly save on the final consumption of energy in production, and as a result, to save the company’s funds in the current difficult war situation (martial law) in Ukraine.

The project conducted a number of trainings on ESO (fan systems and ventilation, compressed air systems), which were attended by many experts representing the Ukrainian industry. The trainings were purely practical with the provision of modern expert experience and the use of measuring equipment, which is necessary for conducting an energy audit of ventilation and compressed air systems. The equipment was procured by the Project and can be used free of charge by national experts trained by UNIDO.

In December 2023, with the participation of UNIDO National Expert Mrs. Lebedynska V.V. a diagnostic examination of the pneumatic and vacuum system of the oil extraction plant was carried out at PJSC “POEZ – KERNEL GROUP” (Poltava). The survey was carried out using the Ultrasonic Leak Detector, which was provided by the UNIDO UKR IEE Project. During the inspection, (1) damage to the vacuum pipe at the entrance to the final distillation column and (2) leaks in the pneumatic collectors of the ratification shop and the oil extraction shop were discovered.

Recommendations were made for the repair and plumbing these damages.

(1) replacement of seals in the vacuum line at the entrance to the final distillation column.

Seals were replaced by our own efforts using available materials (cost of materials 400 UAH). After replacing the seals in the vacuum line at the entrance to the final distillation column, the steam consumption in the refining shop decreased by 200 kg/h, from 4.0 t/h to 3.8 t/h. Estimated savings (due to reduced steam consumption) will amount to UAH 121,000 per month.

The estimated payback period will be less than 4 hours.

(2) replacement of pneumatic manifolds.

The cost of one pneumatic collector with an automatic valve, replacement of pneumatic tubes and the cost of installation will be about UAH 17,000.

When the collectors are replaced, the estimated load reduction for each compressor will be up to 5% (The approximate load reduction will be 32.4 MW per year per compressor, the value of the saved funds will be up to UAH 191,250 without VAT when replacing one pneumatic collector)

As a result, the approximate cost savings when replacing one pneumatic collector will amount to UAH 191,250 without VAT, and the estimated payback period will be about 1.5 months (0.125 years), assuming a stable price for electricity and a continuous production cycle.
