Since 2016, the agro-industrial holding Astarta-Kyiv, including the Globyno Processing Plant, has been actively participating in energy management training programs supported by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). These training initiatives, organised by the UNIDO/GEF UKR IEE Project: “Introduction of Energy Management System Standard in Ukrainian Industry”, became the starting point for the systematic implementation of energy-efficient solutions across the company’s operations.
Complete Transition from Natural Gas to Biogas
One of the key achievements was the complete elimination of natural gas use at the plant. The Globyno Processing Plant has fully switched to biogas, a resource produced internally by the holding. This transition has not only significantly reduced costs but also increased energy independence by utilizing a clean and sustainable energy source.
A Systematic Approach to Energy Management
Thanks to UNIDO’s methodology – which includes regression analysis based on production data – the enterprise was able to model its overall energy consumption. This approach helped identify opportunities for reducing energy use and optimizing resource consumption at every stage of production.
Compressed Air Optimization
As part of the UNIDO-led training, the company also undertook a course on efficient compressed air use. With the knowledge gained and equipment provided, a comprehensive pneumo-audit was conducted. As a result, the plant reduced its compressed air systems from two compressors to one, cutting both electricity use and the cost of one of the most expensive energy types – compressed air.
Results of Energy Management Implementation
The development and implementation of an energy management system, following UNIDO’s approaches, led not only to technical improvements but also to a shift in the corporate culture around energy consumption. Key achievements include:
-
a 19% reduction in natural gas consumption
-
a 43% reduction in electricity consumption
Astarta-Kyiv’s experience clearly demonstrates that a modern enterprise cannot be competitive without an effective energy management system. Cooperation with UNIDO provided not only practical tools, but also a strategic roadmap for advancing energy efficiency across the agro-industrial sector.
