Agro-industrial holding Astarta-Kyiv, Novoorzhytskyi sugar plant LLC, received a 2020 Energy Management Insight Award from the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), a high-level global forum that promotes policies and programs to advance clean energy. Astarta-Kyiv earned the award for producing a high-quality case study to share insights on the process and benefits of setting up an energy management system certified to the global ISO 50001 standard.
This award is part of the CEM Energy Management Leadership Awards program, managed by CEM’s Energy Management Working Group (EMWG), which includes representatives from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, the European Commission, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, and the United States. UNIDO serves as the Operating Agent for the EMWG, which was launched in 2010 by the CEM.
To enter the awards program, Astarta-Kyiv developed and submitted a detailed case study describing its experiences and results using ISO 50001 at Novoorzhytskyi sugar plant. This award-winning case study is available on the CEM website as an inspiration and resource for other organizations interested in achieving significant and enduring energy and cost savings.
In the case study, Astarta-Kyiv, Novoorzhytskyi sugar plant LLC describes key aspects of its ISO 50001-certified energy management system and identifies resulting benefits, including the following achievements over 4 years:
- 27 % energy performance improvement;
- Total energy cost savings – 258 000 ($USD);
- Total CO2-e emission reduction – 1,700 (t)
- Total Energy Savings – 28 600 (GJ).
Astarta-Kyiv Novoorzhytskyi Sugar Plant LLC took an active part in the UNIDO-GEF project “Introduction of EnMS standard in Ukrainian industry”, the enterprise received theoretical and practical knowledge about the peculiarities of the functioning of the EnMS. The UNIDO project trained more than 20 Astarta`s professionals who became drivers of the Astarta-Kyiv energy efficiency movement and received certificates from energy management experts. UNIDO advised Astarta-Kyiv during the preparation and submission of the application for CEM Energy Management Leadership Awards.
